African Traditional Punu Mask

An African Maiden Spirit mask that originates from Gabon and is a traditional mask that was worn during ceremonies by the Punu people of Gabon.

The mask has small ears, slit eyes and protruding lips. The face is oval in shape and has a small head dress on the to of the mask. This is typical of a Punu mask.

The Punu masks are very similar to Japanese mask and have become highly sort after by western collectors. The Punu mask are often depicted in white color with the use of white kaolin pigment that is associated with death. This Pun mask has inlays of brass with patterns molded into the face.

Punu African masks represent the spirit of an ancestor. The Punu people reside along the upper Ngoumie River and live in independent villages that are divided into sects and families
