Zulu woven baskets have been handcrafted by Zulu woman for
centuries and the unbelievable talent that these woman have has been past down
from mother to daughter for many generations.
The time taken
to weave grass baskets can be anything from 2 weeks to many month to make one
new grass Zulu basket. Unfortunately as the modern world starts
to take over, the younger generation are less likely to take up this Zulu tradition
and slowly fewer and fewer young woman are being brought into the skillful art
of making Zulu grass baskets. It won't be long before these wonderful Zulu baskets
and plates are gone form our world and only found in Museums. On
the left is a small display of the Zulu pots available form African Crafts Market.
Each grass basket plate and pot is individually handcrafted so no two will ever
be exactly the same. The Basic designs of Zulu baskets patterns
are Triangle - Masculine Diamond - Feminine Double
triangle forming hour shape glass - Married man Double diamond - Married
woman Zig - Zag (Masculine) - The Assegai of Shaka Series of diamonds
- The shield of Shaka Small Square or dots - A celebration of fruitfulness
-i.e. good rains,good crops
