African Blesbok skull plateA set of African Blesbok horns skull plate( called Blesbok in South Africa, Blesbuck internationally) that have been mounted to a back board and ready for hanging. The African Blesbuck horn set is treated a cleaned ready for export. A skull plate is only part of a skull with horns attached and not a full skull. African Blesbuck is known as a Blesbok in South Africa and is a medium antelope that is related to the Bontebok. The Blesbuck has a purplish color fur and a distinctive white forehead.

The Blesbuck is found in large quantifies in most South Africa game reserves in large herds in open grasslands.

Facts about this animal

Blesbok were an easy source of meat to the early settlers and were hunted close to extermination by the turn of the century. Today, they have been widely re-introduced and their range has been extended into Zimbabwe and Namibia by game farmers although they are indigenous to South Africa.

Blesbok are medium-sized antelope with short, fairly straight, ringed horns carried by both males and females. They have a brown neck and back which becomes darker towards the middle and back of the body. They have a typical white blaze on their muzzle and small dash of white between their horns.

  • Body length: 140–160 cm (4.6-5.3 ft)
  • Shoulder height: 85–100 cm (2.8-3.3 ft)
  • Tail length: 30–45 cm (12-18 in)
  • Weight: 55–80 kg (121-176 lb)

The structure of a population consists of:

Family groups of 20-120 with sub-adult females of all ages, young males of 1-2 years and post-mature ewes
harem groups of 4-25 socially mature ewes >2.5 years and their lambs of 10-18 months, and sometimes associated with a territorial ram
bachelor groups of sub-adult rams, 2-4 years, and occasionally one or two adult rams, >4 years.
adult ram groups of 20-120 with non-territorial adult rams, 4-8 years, and post-mature rams >8 years
solitary territorial rams, 4-8 years
